First, the good. The positive.

  • We THRIVE from receiving healthy doses of sunlight.

 2005 Nov-Dec;81(6):1276-86.

Comparisons of estimated economic burdens due to insufficient solar ultraviolet irradiance and vitamin D and excess solar UV irradiance for the United States.

"We estimate that 50,000-63,000 individuals in the United States and 19,000-25,000 in the UK die prematurely from cancer annually due to insufficient vitamin D. The U.S. economic burden due to vitamin D insufficiency from inadequate exposure to solar UVB irradiance, diet, and supplements was estimated at $40-56 billion in 2004, whereas the economic burden for excess UV irradiance was estimated at $6-7 billion."

And now to question stuff...

The influence of painful sunburns and lifetime sun exposure on the risk of actinic keratoses, seborrheic warts, melanocytic nevi, atypical nevi, and skin cancer

No, it's NOT just because of the sun exposure...

Cutaneous malignant melanoma incidences analyzed worldwide by sex, age, and skin type over personal Ultraviolet-B dose shows no role for sunburn but implies one for Vitamin D3

Chiropractic

In a 2004 study, 1,028 people suffering from allergies such as atopic dermatitis were examined thru x-ray and physical exam. 98% were found to have significant vertebral subluxations, of those that then received consistent chiropractic care 88% reported a decrease in itching symptoms, and 71% showed an improvement in overall skin condition.

As a Doctor; regardless of specialty or type of practice, it is our absolute duty to inform, support, and more importantly, EMPOWER our practice members with the simple truths and principles in life and in health.  We can either look at every body system individually, and every presenting symptom individually, and then address these individually, which does very little to support the overall wellbeing of an individual.  The skin is no different. Dermatologically speaking, it is important to look at our innate processes that serve as defense mechanisms, and vital life support systems.  Research has shown that sun exposure is not conclusive when it comes to various forms of skin cancer, and research supporting the use of sunscreen is even more inconclusive.  People are utilizing sunscreen at a higher rate than ever before in history, are exposed to the sun less, and yet we continue to have higher a higher rates of skin cancer.  The problem, or CAUSE, does not lie within a quick, easy fix of lathering on more sunscreen, it lies deeper within.  There are various sources of dysfunction, or interference to our body’s innate ability to heal and our immune system to respond to dysfunctional cells.  Our ever changing environment plaques our ability to respond and create healthy cells, and a healthy environment to host our cells.  There are known toxins that significantly increase our chance of developing such cancers, and they’re in MOST conventional sunscreens, not to mention most other personal care products (phalates, parabens, phenols, triclosan, fragrances, etc etc).  Without going into it further, it would be imperative to suggest non-toxic, naturally derived (in the true form of ‘natural) mineral-based sunscreens, if they so choose to apply it. There are also many ways to avoid excessive sun exposure, if one so wishes to.  But more importantly, I think it’s of utmost importance to educate patients on the NECESSITY of sun exposure as it is an absolute necessity to life.  Studies show that the majority of Americans are deficient in Vitamin D levels, causing an estimated 50,000+ deaths per year. Optimizing Vit D levels would improve rates of various types of cancer, cardiovascular conditions, allergy related conditions, immune system functions, etc etc.

Given that they are providing their bodies with every other essential of health; optimal nutrients and healthy proteins/fats for growth and repair, oxygen, high quality water, a positive mindset/stress reduction practices to induce a healthy cellular/hormonal environment, and a optimally functioning nervous system, their body will respond positively.  As it is designed to do.    Disclaimer:  All of which is a general response to sunscreen and skin health.  Late stage, serious skin conditions would receive a different approach.
