Chances are... your doctor don't know squat.
Its not their fault! They are only offered a handful of training hours on nutrition, which, is conventional nutrition that doesn't translate into REAL nutrition. Why take continuing education courses or additional courses in nutrition when it really doesn't translate into their world of diagnosing and prescribing and treating symptoms? Where's the incentive??
Nutrition Education in an Era of Global Obesity and Diabetes: Thinking Outside the Box
http://journals.lww.com/academicmedicine/Fulltext/2015/07000/Nutrition_Education_in_an_Era_of_Global_Obesity.11.aspx
- "In 1960, Americans spent three times as much on food ($74 billion) as they did on health care ($27 billion). In 2012, Americans spent twice as much on health care ($2.9 trillion) as they did on food ($1.38 trillion). Over the past five decades, food costs have increased 18-fold; health care costs, 102-fold.1,2"
- "One-third of children born after 2000 are expected to develop type 2 diabetes during their lifetime.11 Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine about generational epidemiological trends, Olshansky et al12 noted, “There is now evidence that America’s children will be the first in the nation’s history to live shorter lives than their parents.”"
A Deficiency of Nutrition Education and Practice in Cardiology
http://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(17)30527-2/fulltext
- "A total of 930 surveys were completed. Among cardiologists, 90% reported receiving no or minimal nutrition education during fellowship training, 59% reported no nutrition education during internal medicine training, and 31% reported receiving no nutrition education in medical school. Among cardiologists, 8% described themselves as having “expert” nutrition knowledge. Nevertheless, fully 95% of cardiologists believe that their role includes personally providing patients with at least basic nutrition information. The percentage of respondents who ate ≥5 servings of vegetables and fruits per day was: 20% (cardiologists), 21% (fellows-in-training), and 26% (cardiovascular team members)."
