The nervous system controls absolutely everything, and it has TWO MODES of operation. The first mode is called “parasympathetic.” I call this state the “feel and heal” state. RESULTS:

Analysis of covariance and paired Student's t tests were used for the statistical evaluation. Immediately after treatment, the perception of pain and the level of menstrual distress were significantly reduced by SMT. This reduction was associated with a significant reduction in plasma levels of KDGPF2a in the SMT group. A significant and similar reduction in plasma KDPGF2a also occurred in the sham group, indicating that a placebo effect was associated with a single sham intervention.

CONCLUSIONS:

This randomized pilot study suggests that SMT may be an effective and safe nonpharmacological alternative for relieving the pain and distress of primary dysmenorrhea. However, the large change in KDPGF2a observed in both treatment groups clearly indicates that further studies with more subjects, studied over a longer time frame, are needed to resolve the question of a placebo effect."

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) – What Does Research Show?

So often we hear, “…well if it’s so good, show me the proof!” Chiropractic case management of CTS has been well established for many years. And yet, we still hear skepticism from patients, MD’s, insurers, employers, and others about the benefits of chiropractic management of CTS. If we can, “show them the data” regarding the effectiveness of chiropractic for CTS patients, we will finally be able to help more people with this potentially disabling condition.
So, let’s take a look at the evidence that supports the benefits of chiropractic for CTS:
  1. Davis PT, Hulbert JR, Kassak KM, et al. “Comparative efficacy of conservative medical and chiropractic treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome: a randomized clinical trial” J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 21.5 (June 1997): 317-326.The most important finding reported in this 91 patient study was that chiropractic treatment was equally effective in reducing CTS symptoms as medical treatment. The chiropractic care included ultrasound, nighttime wrist supports and manipulation of the wrist, arm and spine. Medical care included ibuprofen (800 mg, 3x/day for 1 wk, 800 mg, 2x’day for 1 wk, & 800 mg as needed for 7 wks) plus a night wrist splint. Both groups did equally well but given the side-effect potential of ibuprofen on the stomach, liver, and kidneys, a strong argument for the non-drug, chiropractic approach can be made.
  2. Bonebrake AR, Fernandez JE, Marley RJ et al. “A treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome: evaluation of objective and subjective measures” J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 13.9 (Nov-Dec 1990): 507-520CTS sufferers (n=38) received chiropractic spinal manipulation and extremity adjusting. Also, soft tissue therapy, dietary modifications or supplements (B6) and daily exercises were prescribed. After treatment, results showed improvement in all strength and range of motion measures. Also, a significant reduction in pain and distress ratings was reported.

Mariano KA, McDougle MA, Tanksley GW “Double crush syndrome: chiropractic care of an entrapment neuropathy” J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 14.4 (May 1991):262-5In 1973, Upton and McComas first proposed the presence of the “double crush syndrome.” Their hypothesis was that when a nerve is pinched anywhere along its route, it makes the rest of the nerve more sensitive to otherwise “normal” stimulation. A case report of a man with both cervical radiculopathy and carpal tunnel syndrome, i.e., “double crush syndrome” was presented. Chiropractic management consisted of chiropractic manipulative therapy as well as ultrasound, electrical nerve stimulation, traction and a wrist splint. The experimental basis, clinical evidence, etiology, symptomatology and findings of this condition are discussed. The Double Crush Syndrome helps explain why cervical/neck manipulation helps many CTS patients.

Cervical artery dissection refers to a tear in the internal carotid or the vertebral artery that results in an intramural haematoma and/or an aneurysmal dilatation. Although cervical artery dissection is thought to occur spontaneously, physical trauma to the neck, especially hyperextension and rotation, has been reported as a trigger. Headache and/or neck pain is the most common initial symptom of cervical artery dissection. Other symptoms include Horner's syndrome and lower cranial nerve palsy. Both headache and/or neck pain are common symptoms and leading causes of disability, while cervical artery dissection is rare. Patients often consult their general practitioner for headache and/or neck pain, and because manual-therapy interventions can alleviate headache and/or neck pain, many patients seek manual therapists, such as chiropractors and physiotherapists. Cervical mobilization and manipulation are two interventions that manual therapists use. Both interventions have been suspected of being able to trigger cervical artery dissection as an adverse event. The aim of this review is to provide an updated step-by-step risk-benefit assessment strategy regarding manual therapy and to provide tools for clinicians to exclude cervical artery dissection. Key messages Cervical mobilization and/or manipulation have been suspected to be able to trigger cervical artery dissection (CAD). However, these assumptions are based on case studies which are unable to established direct causality. The concern relates to the chicken and the egg discussion, i.e. whether the CAD symptoms lead the patient to seek cervical manual-therapy or whether the cervical manual-therapy provoked CAD along with the non-CAD presenting complaint. Thus, instead of proving a nearly impossible causality hypothesis, this study provide clinicians with an updated step-by-step risk-benefit assessment strategy tool to (a) facilitate clinicians understanding of CAD, (b) appraise the risk and applicability of cervical manual-therapy, and (c) provide clinicians with adequate tools to better detect and exclude CAD in clinical settings.

  • The most recent in-depth review of the relationship between stroke and chiropractic care, was published in the February 15, 2008 issue of Spine Journal. It looked at 10 years of hospital records, involving 100 million person-years.
    The verdict?
    There was no evidence of an increase in vertebral artery dissection risk with chiropractic, compared with medical management. Based on this review, stroke, particularly vertebrobasilar dissection, should be considered a random and unpredictable complication of any neck movement, including cervical manipulation.
    In other words, cases of serious injury are practically nonexistent. By comparison, it makes the deaths caused by over-the-counter-pain-relievers to be considerably more troubling! Although reports vary, annual deaths in the United States attributable to NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, ketoprofen and tiaprofenic acid) range from 3,200 to higher than 16,500 deaths and 76,000 hospitalizations.9"

The findings were published Dec. 11 in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
  • They continue on to say... Cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and other non-cancer diseases accounted for most of the additional deaths in the men who lost 3 centimeters or more of height.
    The reasons for the association between height loss and increased risk of illness and death aren't clear, said the researchers from the Royal Free and University College Medical School in London. It's possible there could be an underlying mechanism that contributes to both bone loss, which results in height loss, and heart disease and other illnesses, the researchers said.

  • Yes... I do think I could think of a reason for these other physiological and pathological changes associated with the decrease in height... how about... A significant decrease in disc height accentuates that amount of stress on the nervous system (both nerve roots and spinal cord tension) directly affecting the nervous system and it's ability to maintain homeostasis throughout the body, which includes vital organs that are 'mysteriously' failing.

Sleep Position

But, is there research that suggests an optimal position for sleeping?
Some think the best position is on your back with your body in a straight line but in one study it was fascinating that “Consistently, poor sleepers spent more time on their backs with their heads straight.“ [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6844798]
Another study found that a ”change from the supine [back] to the lateral [side] body position increased the stability of the upper airways considerably.” [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11204057]
Still another study attempted to determine optimal sleeping positions by measuring brain glymphatic (CSF-Interstitial Fluid) exchange efficiency in rats and found that glymphatic transport was most efficient in the side position compared with the back or on the stomach positions, [http://www.jneurosci.org/content/35/31/11034.short]
What do we find epidemiologically or anthropologically regarding sleep position?
In an epidemiological study they found that the majority of subjects sleep in the side lying position and that this sleep position significantly protected against waking neck, shoulder blade, and arm pain and significantly promoted high sleep quality ratings. Surprisingly while sleeping on the back has been recommended for the prevention of neck symptoms this study couldn’t find any advantage to sleeping on your back. It could feel worse. Not just trying to get you out of pain, but looking to restore health and bring you back to living at 100% of your God-given potential.
What the leaders before me began to understand at the end of their 40-50 years in chiropractic that has become the leading science today is Quantum science - which goes beyond the cell to the particles that make it up. They look at the atom, the electrical particles; protons, electrons, and neutrons - that make it up, and even the subatomic level at the quarks and the gluons that make up the electrons, protons, and neutrons. What we’ve come to know is that when there is interference or disruption all the way down to the electrical, particle, subatomic level that makes up your being. Being subluxation free goes beyond a corrected x-ray, symptom, or diagnoses and goes deeper into effecting who you were created to be.
In many ways, chiropractic is about the internal integrity of the particles of dust God molded together on His Potter’s wheel to form you. Internal integrity = external integration – the integration of who you are body, mind, and spirit.
We’re told we are Like clay in the hands of the Potter (capital P). Our chiropractic patriarchs preached about uniting man the physical with man the spiritual. If un-united, then we’re not being built into the kind of pottery God can use both in size and function to make the most of our lives and have the greatest impact on the world.
There is a supernatural energy that brings life to tissues that flows through the nervous system as directed by the God-given intelligence of your body chiropractors call innate. Without interference, every quark and atom of your body is vibrating at the frequency it was intended so that you are everything intended you to be. Through the power of an adjustment, cells are fully operational, tissues are working and healing normally, organs are optimized, and you’re moving towards life and away from symptoms or disease to the best of your ability. You’re whole. You’re your best. Your better than your best! You’re re-connected

THE CHIROPRACTIC VERSE (The Chiropractic Miracle Equation): “they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover” — Mark 16:17,18. Jesus says that as we take our thenar and pisiform contacts, the “sick” would “recover.” The word used for sick, “arroustos” would mean these people were not just feeling bad, but gravely ill. What is interesting about “recovery” is that based on the tense, He is not talking about an instantaneous miracle, but those who would get well progressively, getting better and better, until their health is restored over time. A beautiful vision of chiropractic as that is how the miracle equation of chiropractic care tends to work: Adjustment = Miracle/Time (A = M/T). I like to think, when you combine a scientific, specific, natural chiropractic adjustment with the supernatural power to heal from Mk 16:18, Providence moves on behalf of both patient and doctor. As a chiropractor laying hands on people weekly or any that believe, in addition to the science – your desire for God to use you to heal people and a belief that God can release that healing through you is all you need to start seeing miracles today.
